Question: People tend to think that hair loss and thinning hair is only a concern for men; but this is a condition that also effects women. Are the causes for thinning hair and hair loss the same for men and women, or is it different?
Halasz: Hair loss effects both men and women but in different capacities. For men, the first signs of male pattern baldness are a receding hairline and thinning hair around the crown area. If left untreated, hair loss will progress as the follicles become more shriveled. Eventually, the follicles die, which results in baldness.
Female pattern hair loss starts with thinning hair across the central area of the scalp. While most women tend to retain their hairline, some will suffer from Frontal fibrosing alopecia. If left untreated, the thinning often spreads to the side areas of the scalp in the temples and above the ears. A small number of women will experience baldness. While most men and women follow these patterns, it is possible for men to develop a female pattern of hair loss, and for women to show a male pattern. In some rare cases, a man or woman can develop both patterns.
Question: Is it true that hair extensions, weaves and certain hairstyles can cause thinning hair and hair loss?
Halasz: Hair extensions, weaves and certain hairstyles like braids can cause what is called traction alopecia. Tight braids, excess pulling can cause irreparable damage to the follicle which can lead to hair loss.
Question: If someone wants to use hair extensions and weaves, what can they do to prevent thinning hair and hair loss?
Halasz: Try utilizing a system that is more temporary; like using taped strands versus glued, braided or sewn in strands. We also suggest using a product like évolis Professional which elongates the growth phase within the hair life cycle. This is in turn strengthens the hair follicle helping to offset some of the stress caused with extension/weave pulling.
Question: Can hairstyling products and or tools create thinning hair and hair loss?
Halasz: The misuse of certain tools can cause thinning hair. Teasing the hair for example, can cause pulling and breakage. Extreme hot tools can inflame the follicle area when exposed to high heat, and that in turn causes hair loss. Overuse of dry shampoo can clog the follicles, this causes inflammation, and that in turn causes hair loss.
Question: What preventative steps can one do to prevent aggressive hair loss and or thinning hair?
Halasz: Health hair starts at the scalp. Treat your scalp like you treat your skin and give it loving care daily. Eat healthy foods and be sure to have a healthy dose of key vitamins. (Edit note: Look for Biotin, Vitamin C, and Niacin vitamins for healthy hair and skin.)
Question: You experienced hair loss and searched for a solution. Can you talk a bit about your journey?
Halasz: As a Biotech CEO I had been personally affected by hair loss after she turned 40 and her hair started to thin out. As a scientist, I searched for solutions for hair loss, but began to lose hope after trying everything without any success. Serendipitously, on a trip to Japan, I encountered technology based on blocking a protein called FGF5 by using naturally sourced ingredients. Initially impressed with the science, I started using the FGF5 blocking products. After a few months, the total hair transformation that was achieved was so impressive I acquired the company. évolis™ was born shortly after.
Question: How exactly does Evolis work? And can the product be used for men and women?
Halasz: This product is for men and women. By tapping into the powerful FGF5 technology combined with natural botanical extracts and revolutionary formulations, évolis has been developed to deliver longer, stronger, healthier, and thicker hair that is touchable with lustrous shine and effortless control. évolis is the first range on the market based on strong science backed by real studies, real people and real results. évolis has over 10 years of dedicated research into hair growth and hair biology by unlocking the secrets of the hair cycle our scientists have delivered the first and only solutions for hair loss and thinning that go to the root of all challenges by addressing hair follicle biology.
The above photos are of real people using evolis.
Question: Can you explain how the évolis studies were conducted, and what the results were?
Halasz: Scientists have been seeking solutions to hair cycle shortening for many years. The discovery of FGF5, the key hair cycle stop signal, led our scientists to their unique pursuit of FGF5 blockers to deliver solutions to hair challenges, hair loss and thinning.
Instead of developing synthetic compounds, we looked towards nature. It took over 10 years of dedicated research and screening of thousands of plants to discover the perfect blend of FGF5 inhibitors. We have clinically and dermatologically tested our formulas to ensure maximum performance, backed by strong science with scientifically validated results.

Question: After starting évolis, how soon would someone start to see results?
Halasz: It typically takes three months (90 days) of use when using the REVERSE Activator. The first thing you will notice is a change in texture. Then less hair falling out, which you can easily see either in the shower or when you brush your hair. Then you’ll start to notice new hair growth. You’ll spot little wispy hairs along the hair line and the part line.
Question: Should someone use évolis’ three products: shampoo, conditioner and activator? Or does it depend upon the amount of thinning and hair loss?
Halasz: We recommend using all three products to see the best results. For example, our REVERSE shampoo and conditioner targets those suffering from hair thinning and aging. The color safe formula gently cleanses each strand, while added volume boosters instantly lift roots. It’s formulated with a proprietary blend of natural actives and antioxidants, enhanced with keratin and wheat protein to support hair health. Our conditioner is lightweight, increases thickness, and adds shine while the strengthening keratin and wheat protein fortify hair structure.
Our activator, Activator targets those suffering from thinning hair, aging hair, and aggressive hair fall. Proprietary blend of natural actives and antioxidants accelerates hair growth and decreases hair fall. The activator is formulated with keratin and wheat protein to strengthen and fortify each strand.
Using all three together will enable a powerhouse effect to gorgeous hair.
Question: What hair care tips can you give to someone who has thinning hair, or aggressive hair loss? For example, in the summertime, should someone wear a hat to prevent damage from UVA/UVB rays, or use a hair protectant spray that contains an SPF?
Halasz: Everyone should wear some form of protection for their scalp. Wearing a hat is great, but remember to keep it loose. Aggressive friction caused by tight hats can cause inflammation of the follicle, which in turn can lead to hair loss. We have recently created a UV Protector which delivers your daily dose of FGF5 inhibitors in addition UV protectors. Remember to always take care of your scalp daily.
Question: Are there any hair products or styling tools that one should avoid if dealing with hair loss issues?
Halasz: There really is no limit to the types of tools and products you can use if you are challenged with thinning hair. Do what makes you feel good! I would suggest staying away from products that contain silicones, as they have a tendency to weigh the hair down.
Question: After using évolis, can one style their hair how they would like to, or do they need any precautions?
Halasz: évolis allows your hair to become thicker and healthier; so any hair style you choose is perfect.
Question: If, after using évolis, would there be a reaction if they color or highlight their hair?
Halasz: No, please go about your normal hair activities.
Question: How long does someone need to be on évolis? If, for example, they experience positive effects from using évolis, do they need to continue using the product as part of hair maintenance.
Halasz: You never quit using toothpaste after your cavities are fixed, or moisturizer to take care of your skin. The same idea is true for évolis…take better care of your hair. Use your évolis activator daily, and then follow with the shampoo and conditioner as needed.
