Looking for tequila to sip and savor?
I’ve a fondness for drinks that I can while away the hours with--a companion to help me unwind from the day and enjoy the night’s silence. Give me smooth bourbon, a balanced Scotch whiskey, something, deep, mysterious and multifaceted. It makes me a relaxed and happy gal.
When Hornitos Black Barrel Tequila showed up at my door, I confess that I made a snap judgment based on its appearance. It’s sexy looking. Sleek and powerful. I hoped that the tequila inside would live up to its good looks.

I poured a dram (well maybe two or three….who’s counting) of the Hornitos Black Barrel tequila into a rocks glass neat. There are certain libations that you just don’t sully with an ice cube. The dark amber liquor beckoned me much like Alice with the “Drink Me” bottle.
Hornitos is an anejo tequila, (100% agave tequila) that’s been aged for 12 months in traditional American Oak casks, then placed in deeply charred American Oak barrels for 4 months, for the final aging step it's then poured into specially-toasted American Oak barrels for 2 months. The result is a smoky, complex flavor. As for mouth feel, well it’s smoother than silk, supple and light.
There are notes of vanilla, agave and pepper—making it slightly (very slightly) sweet. The after feel/taste is smoky and yes, smooth. There isn’t an acrid or bitter taste.
To me, it’s reminiscent of a well-aged Scotch or Bourbon—the type of drink that you enjoy at the end of the meal. The only accompaniment the Hornitos Black Barrel Tequila needs is you.
