Karl Lagerfeld's early design sketches and a few completed creations are coming up for auction.
Karl Lagerfeld's a major design force. We kid and call him "Uncle Karl," we wait with (mostly) bated breath to see what he'll come up with next, we even follow his cat on Twitter, but we forget that many, many years ago, Karl Lagerfeld was a humble assistant designer. Palm Beach Modern Auctions has acquired a treasure trove of Lagerfeld's work for Tiziani Roma from the early '60s.
The auction's called Tiziani Archive:Lagerfeld + Liz. "It contains Lagerfeld sketchbooks - some showing entire ready-to-wear lines for a season - hundreds of individual sketches by Lagerfeld and other Tiziani designers, hundreds of photos of couture shows, and several signed photos and personal notes from Elizabeth Taylor to Tiziani." stated auctioneer Rico Baca of Palm Beach Modern Auctions in a press release.
Can you imagine owning something that Karl Lagerfeld designed for La Liz? Priceless! How does Elizabeth Taylor come into the mix? She loved Tiziani's designs and wore them for film roles and real life. Some of the sketches have notes stating that they were for Elizabeth Taylor.Other famous clients of the time were Princess Marcella Borghese, Doris Duke and Gina Lollobrigida.
"Those who've seen it (the archive)have had the same sort of reaction a jeweler might have when examining a famous gem for the first time," Baca said in a press release. "A board member of a top design house remarked that the archive belongs in the Met's fashion collection."
The top photo is of a Tiziani coral gown with feathered cape, that was matched to the original pre-production sketch. The sale also includes four other pieces of Tiziani couture: Three dresses and a beaded top, four Mary McFadden couture garments and a mod-style Kiki Hart pantsuit.
The auction will be held on January 11 at noon. It will be held at the auction house, 417 Bunker Rd., West Palm Beach, FL 33405. All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers.com.
