To celebrate 6 years of creative collaboration between Pikolinos and the Maasi, Chief William Kikanae is visiting the US.
Pikolinos, the Spanish footwear brand—they create gorgeous, detail-rich shoes and boots for guys and gals, have collaborated with the Maasi Tribe for the past six years. The tribe hand beads sandals, bags and accessories for the footwear brand.
Known as the Maasi Project, the women of the Maasi Mara in Kenya and Tanzania create these exclusive designs and 100 percent of the profits have gone back to the tribe. This assists in the tribe’s economic freedom and empowers the women of the tribe with greater rights and employment.
Maasi Chief William Kikanae will be at Harry’s Shoes (2299 Broadway at 83rd St), today from 1 pm to 4 pm.
The Project is promoted and supported without losing sight of the culture and values of the Maasai community. These regular salaries provided by the Maasai Project help provide drinking water, medication and money to fund their children’s education.
With World Fair Trade Day coming up on May 9th, the Maasai Project is a timely story about a program that is making an impact and tangible contributions to the fight against poverty.
